Follow these simple steps to write your own wedding vows.

You’ve decided to write your own wedding vows, but you are quickly regretting that decision as you sit at your kitchen table contemplating how to start. This is not uncommon, just a little thing we call writer’s block. But let’s face it; it’s difficult to write about this person you love and why you chose to spend the rest of your life with them. Your mind fills with hundreds of memories and emotions that you’ve had together, but you are unsure which ones to write about. If you follow these simple steps, you’ll be done with your vows in no time!

During this exercise, you’ll be creating an outline of memories. This will help you organize all of your ideas so you can choose which ones to include in your wedding vows.

1. The Beginning: How did you two meet? Is there a special story that you would be willing to share with your friends and family on your wedding day? If so, write down every detail of how you met.

1. Memories As a Couple: Start jotting down memories you’ve had together as a couple. Don’t write every single memory, just the ones that are special to you and your significant other. Your wedding vows will not include all of these memories, but it will be easier to choose which ones you want to talk about if you have them in front of you.

1. Why You’re in Love: Why do you love this person? What is it about him or her that gives you this powerful feeling? This can be hard to put in words, but if you glance back at the memories you’ve already written down, they will remind you of how you fell in love.

1. Why He/She is the Chosen One: Out of all the people in the world, you are choosing this person to spend the rest of your life with. You never thought of it that way, did you? There has to be an abundance of reasons as to why you want to spend all of eternity with this one person.

Look at all you’ve written down! Your writer’s block is cured. You now have so many ideas to work with when writing your vows. From the list, choose which memories you want to write about. These are your wedding vows, and they can be as long as you want.

After writing your vows, you now have a list of memories that you and your significant other shared together. Some couples create a book of memories, while others use these ideas to write a speech at their wedding reception. You can use this list for that speech as well. Talk to the NJ DJ that you booked for the wedding reception and let them know that you want to say a speech. The NJ wedding DJ will announce that the bride and groom want to say a few words. You can also choose a number of songs to play during the speech. Talk to your NJ DJ beforehand so you can properly plan this out.
